Ingredients

Scale

Dough and Filling

  • 3 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll sheets
  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (339 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded, divided

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare muffin tin: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Set aside.
  2. Roll out dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out each tube of crescent roll dough into a 12×16-inch rectangle. If using perforated dough, pinch the seams to seal so the cheese does not leak.
  3. Make garlic butter for filling: In a medium bowl, combine ½ cup softened butter, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, and 1 tablespoon finely chopped chives. Mix well to create your garlic butter spread.
  4. Spread butter and sprinkle cheese: Spread about one-third of the garlic butter mixture evenly over one dough sheet. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mild cheddar cheese evenly over the buttered dough.
  5. Roll up dough tightly: Starting at the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. This ensures the cheesy layers stay compact.
  6. Cut dough logs: Cut the log in half lengthwise, then cut each half lengthwise again to make four sections. Repeat this process with the remaining two dough sheets, so you have 12 sections total.
  7. Shape cruffins: Working one dough section at a time with the layered side facing out, roll it into a cinnamon roll shape. Tuck in the end piece to secure the roll.
  8. Place in muffin tin: Arrange each rolled cruffin into the prepared muffin tin cups. Repeat until all 12 are placed.
  9. Bake cruffins: Bake the cruffins in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until they turn golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Prepare garlic butter topping: While baking, whisk together melted 3 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 1 teaspoon chopped chives, and 1 teaspoon kosher salt in a small bowl.
  11. Brush butter over warm cruffins: Once baked, immediately brush the warm garlic butter mixture generously over each cruffin to add flavor and shine.

Notes

  • Make sure to pinch seams when using perforated crescent rolls to prevent cheese from oozing out during baking.
  • Use room temperature butter for easier mixing and even spreading.
  • Try swapping mild cheddar with sharp cheddar or a blend of cheeses for different flavor profiles.
  • If you don’t have chives, you can substitute with finely chopped green onions or parsley.
  • These cruffins are best enjoyed warm but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes to regain crispness.
