Ingredients

Scale

Churro Dough

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 stick unsalted butter (4 ounces)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (4.5 ounces)
  • 3 large eggs, whisked

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/2 cup melted Nutella, warmed until runny

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil (enough for deep frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Nutella and Dough Ingredients: Begin by melting the Nutella until it is pourable, then set it aside for later use. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1 stick of unsalted butter, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar. Bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Form the Dough: Once the mixture is boiling, remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately stir in 1 cup of flour. Stir until the mixture forms a smooth ball of dough. Allow the dough to cool slightly, about 5 minutes. After cooling, add beaten eggs to the dough one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully mixed in before adding the next. Your dough should be smooth and slightly sticky.
  3. Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Coating: In a separate bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. This will be used to coat the churros after frying. Set this mixture aside for later.
  4. Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large, heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). It’s important to maintain this temperature for evenly cooked churros.
  5. Pipe and Fry the Churros: Transfer the prepared dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Carefully pipe 4-6 inch long strips of dough into the hot oil, cutting them with scissors to release each churro. Fry the churros until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  6. Coat and Serve: Remove the churros from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. While still warm, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat. Serve the churros with the melted Nutella for dipping and enjoy the delicious treat!

Notes

  • Make sure the oil temperature stays consistent at 350°F for best frying results.
  • The dough should be slightly sticky but firm enough to pipe; if too runny, add a tablespoon of flour.
  • You can prepare the cinnamon sugar coating and Nutella dip ahead of time and store them separately.
  • Use a star-shaped piping tip for traditional churro ridges, enhancing crispness and sugar adherence.
  • Drain excess oil well before coating in cinnamon sugar to avoid sogginess.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor, as churros tend to lose crispiness over time.
