Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (for drizzling)
  • Optional: extra pistachios and orange zest for garnish

Filling

  • ½ cup shelled pistachios, finely chopped
  • ½ cup mascarpone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  2. Make the filling: In a bowl, combine mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy. Chill this mixture in the refrigerator until ready to use to help it firm up.
  3. Prepare the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet if needed and cut it into six equal rectangles for uniform pastries.
  4. Score and egg wash: Using a sharp knife, lightly score a ½-inch border inside each rectangle without cutting all the way through, to define the edges. Prick the center of each rectangle with a fork to prevent excessive puffing in the middle. Brush the edges with beaten egg to help them turn golden when baked.
  5. Bake the pastry: Place the rectangles on the parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until they are golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely.
  6. Fill and garnish: Once cooled, gently press down the center of each pastry to create a small well. Spoon a generous amount of the orange mascarpone filling into each center. Sprinkle with finely chopped pistachios and drizzle with honey for added sweetness and texture. Garnish with additional orange zest and pistachios if desired.
  7. Serve immediately: These pastries are best enjoyed fresh to preserve the puff pastry’s crispness and the filling’s creamy texture.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is thoroughly thawed for easy handling and even baking.
  • Chilling the mascarpone mixture helps it set and prevents it from running off the pastry when filled.
  • Use fresh oranges for zest and juice to get the best flavor.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute mascarpone with a vegan cream cheese alternative.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 1-2 days to keep pastry crisp.
